Recently there was a fascinating series of stories - 3 or 4 of them - on NPR about the
USS Kirk. The
Kirk was a destroyer escort, and was one of the last ships in South Vietnamese waters after the Americans evacuated Saigon. It was ordered to go, unaccompanied, on a daring rescue mission to collect members of the South Vietnamese Army and their relatives. Incredible stuff.
