R the Wonderdog

Yesterday was a very sad day.  I had to put my beloved dog Radar to sleep.

He had a long life, and a good one, and he is not suffering any more.

A lot of people love him and will miss him very much. It will sure be lonely without him.

Wisconsin -- Day 2

Our sunny Wisconsin Saturday started with a quick run for K and I.  Let me be clear: I'm using "quick" to mean "brief" and not "speedy."  Except even that's not true.  It actually started with us failing to get out of bed for 45 minutes after the alarm went off.  But K was so enjoying the heavy covers!

Anyway, post-run we headed over to the main house for a delicious breakfast of coffee, orange-mango juice, baked veggie omelet, and oatmeal-coconut cake.  Every bite was delicious!

It turns out that there isn't a ton to do in and around Lodi, Wisconsin, so we all latched on like pit bulls to the main cultural attraction within an hour's drive: Taliesin.

The iconic Frank Lloyd Wright design is a few towns over, outside of Spring Green, but we piled in the cars and trekked west for some fresh air and architectural discussion.  Unfortunately, since we hadn't really planned ahead too well, the tours of the house itself were all booked up.  Instead, we toured what they called "The Studio," which is actually still a functional school of architecture - degree-granting and everything.  But as T pointed out, it's also kind of a weird, cultish place, where all the students are piously devoted to the master.  It's a little strange.

But strange or not, the man had a gift.

The studio from the outside.  The skylights provide lots of natural light for the artists.

The theater.

The Romeo and Juliet water tower.
This led to a discussion of (1) why people use Romeo and Juliet as shorthand for true lovers, when they just die at the end, and (2) whether there is any other pair in literature as famous as those two.

The entrance to the theater.

Lots of right angles.

Apparently in Welsh, LL is  a letter.

The main entry.

After our tour, we headed back to the B&B to get ready for the wedding.  K and I partied like rock stars in our room while we did - spraying champagne all over, swinging from the light fixtures, breaking furniture, snorting coke, etc.  Generally having a grand time!

Just kidding.  There was no coke.  Otherwise it's all true.

Then off we went to the wedding.  Our GPS got us there, but I don't think it took the shortest route; it was scenic though!  The setting for the wedding was a barn, which appears to have been converted into an event space for more than just this one night.  Know how I know?  It was air conditioned. That was clutch, because it was uncomfortably warm in the summer afternoon sunshine.  Then, the reception.

The lovely setting

I feel like this picture says a lot...

Cousin C, looking more the way a blushing bride should look

Cousin A, doing her sisterly duty

Cousin M, doing his brotherly duty

 The whole gang

 Proud parents

 A and M

The moment we've all been waiting for!

A moment when (almost) no one was looking

 J, D, and Dad

A and M, stealing the show

And last but certainly not least, bed!

Goal #34

Goal #34: try not to let R the Wonderdog walk into anything.

Technically I guess I've already failed at this goal, since he walked into two things earlier today.  But I guess I'm starting from scratch. And since he'll be at S's most of the week, I really just have to worry about the next 12 hours, and then start worrying again on Friday night when I pick him up.

Seems like a simple goal, but I probably will not succeed.

Recap of goal #33: fail, fail, fail.  In fact, there's more stuff on the table than there was at the beginning of the week.  I did move it all briefly to remove and wash the tablecloth, but it's all right back where it started.

Really, I should probably just give up on the goals, because I am accomplishing so few of them.  Or my goals should be things like, "Brush my teeth every night."  Done.  It's so frustrating to never actually accomplish the things I want to accomplish, even when they're so simple.  Meh.

Goal #33

Goal #33: Clean off the table.

Everybody has a place in their house that they throw their junk when they walk in the door.

I have several.

Probably the worst offender -- or, more accurately, the most abused horizontal surface -- in my apartment is the table.  It's near the door, it's big, and my hands are always overly full when I come in and I need someplace to deposit things.  It's getting a little ridiculous.

Recap of goal #32: I've decided to keep the new desk -- but I still haven't put it together yet.  Baby steps?

Goal #32

Goal #32: sort out the desk situation.

Maybe it's time I start accomplishing things again.  This seems like as good a week as any, except that it'll be a short week for me.  So my limited goal is to figure out what I want to do about my desk.

I bought a new desk, but I haven't put it together yet.  It definitely fits the style and feel of my place better than the one I have now, but it's small and has less storage space -- and I need all the storage I can get.  Plus, I probably shouldn't be willy-nilly spending hundreds of dollars on furniture I don't need.  But it's just so much more fitting.

Must decide.

Recap of goal #31: I am still here, so I guess by definition I am still chuggin'.

A World of Difference (As Revealed by a Salad)

A couple of weeks ago, T and I went to see Sarah Jane and the Blue Notes at the Whitaker Music Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden.  The music was good but is only incidental to the story.

I packed dinner to go (having a cooler with wheels is really handy), which included salads for both of us.  Because of the nature of the seating arrangements at the concert, we were half reclined on the blanket, which made holding the salad bowl with one hand and the fork in the other a bit of a challenge.

My solution to this problem was to eat with my left hand (I'm right handed), which was easier because of my position on the blanket.  This was successful about 80% of the time, but comfortable.

T's solution to this problem was to oddly reposition his bowl so it was close to his mouth, which also allowed him to continue eating with his left hand (he's left-handed.)  This was successful about 100% of the time, but uncomfortable.

What does this difference in approach say, exactly?

I'm flexible.  He's determined.

Goal #31

Goal #31: keep on chuggin'.

Meh.

Recap of goal #30: So, it turns out I managed to cross about two things off my to-do list.  All week.  Not great.
