I love my house and the space around it. The yard, the garden, the whole bit. But I have to admit, every fall there is a sense of relief when cutting the grass is no longer one of the chores, or when I can just ignore the gardens for several months. "Who cares if it hasn't rained? There's nothing growing!" It's nice to have a bit of a break.
But then, it's also nice to start it all over. Spring is a time of so many projects, spring cleaning only being the most well known.
1. Those spots in the yard where the grass is torn up because the Amazon guy decided it would be better to drive around the car that was parked in the driveway turnaround than to back out the way he had come in? That needs grass seed.
2. All those seeds that need planting sooner than I ever get around to it? I'll try to get them in on time this year. In fairness, that probably is not until April for most, but I need to add my amendments to my garden soil and get it all ready to go.
3. I also have the fun of laying out my garden. I look at last year's plan, see what I have this year, what a good rotation is, and map out the whole thing. "You can't plant x behind y, but y needs to be in one of the spots that gets the most sun, and y can't be near z...." It's like a puzzle that way!
4. Let's not forget about the landscaping either. Those beds have to be cleaned out, last year's growth pruned back, and everything made ready for the return of the perennials. (Aside: why does anyone plant anything other than perennials for landscaping?)
Maybe I'll even do a little of that old indoors standby, the spring cleaning.
How, you might ask, is this Adding a Little Fun? Well, four ways. First, just because I actually do enjoy these things. Second, because I get to be outside in what will hopefully be beautiful spring weather. Third, because I get to catch up on my podcasts, which I always enjoy. And last but certainly not least, I get to use my new tractor-wagon combo!
